Ten minutes with Christina Martin
Hey I’m Christina Martin. I am a self-managed Canadian singer and songwriter, just trying to make my own way in the world.
How did you get into country music?
I was introduced to many types of music growing up, but it wasn’t until I lived in Austin Texas 2000-2003 that I fell in love with some Americana and Country artists, new and old. Singer songwriters like Townes Van Zandt, Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin…and my interest in songs with storytelling and strong vocal delivery really began to grow at that point. I also have a strong love for classic rock and pop artists like Tina Turner, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and I think my varied interest are reflected in my music more than ever now.
How would you describe your sound?
Americana with pop and rock sensibilities.
What is your favorite country music song?
1. To Listen to (and why)
recorded by Roy Orbison
written by Joe Melson and Roy Orbison
This song and Roy Orbison were favorites of my father, and I can still hear him singing Blue Bayou, walking around with his robe sipping cognac. The song also reminds me of our family trips to Florida when I was very young. Me and my two brothers piled in the back seat of my fathers Lincoln with my parents in the front managing the cassette deck and radio.
2. To Perform (and why)
By The Everly Brothers written by Boudleaux Bryant
Dale Murray and I began singing this, largely because we were inspired by the Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris version. These are two of our favorite artists. It’s a beautiful song that doesn’t shy away from expressing the pained side of love, which we all feel at some point.
Who would be your dream collaboration?
Bruce Springsteen co-writing an album with me, and Jeff Lynne producing that album.
If we came to a Christina Martin gig, what should we expect?
To laugh, cry, and sometimes dance.
What’s new with you?
I’m releasing my new single in March, ‘You Ran From Me’ out March 4. And I’m touring throughout March, all over the UK.
