Introducing The Hello Darlins

There’s such a wealth of talent coming out of Canada as far as country music is concerned. There’s Shania of course, Terri Clark and more recently Lindsay Ell and Tenille Townes to mention just a few, but a name new to me is The Hello Darlins . Their most recent single ” Aberdeen” ( taken from their debut album ” Go By Feel” , due in 2021) really captured my attention and made me intrigued to find out more! While the song was inspired by a horse, what it’s really about is loyalty and friendship and how to extend that beyond the boundaries of a ‘ fence-line’ or lifetime.

It transpires that The Hello Darlins are a new collective of top flight Canadian musicians with a changing line up ( they enlisted Joey Landreth of The Bros Landreth and Tammy Rogers from The SteelDrivers for this new release) . The concept for the band took shape when founder members, Calgary-based singer Candace Lancia and Hammond organist Mike Little , crossed paths again after first meeting at a recording studio six years earlier. They soon found themselves making music together in between their work with other artists and the idea of a flexible band, utilising a cast of Canada’s most in-demand session musicians to forge a hybrid of country, gospel and soul was born. Usually a 5-6 piece band, they have also performed as a duo and up to a 9-piece collective. The project is fronted by female lead vocalist Candace, and in a live setting each member takes turns performing various songs.
” We thought it would be fun to put together a band with long-time, professional musicians who are often the people behind the songs you hear on the radio”, Candace explains. Mike adds ” We’ve always been IN the band. It’s fun to have a killer project with our friends-who also happen to be really incredible musicians”.
Along with recording at their own studio in Calgary, The Hello Darlins have been laying down tracks at Calgary’s Studio D and Winnipeg’s Stereobus , and are fortunate enough to be teaming up with multiple Grammy award winning Mike Poole ( Robert Plant, Patti Griffin, Buddy Miller, John Prine, The Wood Bros, Nashville TV series) to create a unique mix that supports an organic production of real instrumentation and real vocals.
There’s already been a fantastic reaction to their previous singles ” Still Waters ” and ” Catch That Train” from their rapidly growing fanbase, and there’s mounting excitement and anticipation surrounding the upcoming album.
