The Guts You Always Had – Stories Behind The Songs

liv 1

I initially wrote this song as a birthday present to my sister. When you’re a broke songwriter and a family birthday is coming up, you get creative! However, it ended up being a very honest song about growing up with someone, going through different phases of your relationship with them and suddenly, as an adult, seeing that person’s struggle from their perspective and understanding them better.

It’s about being inspired to be a better person because you see how they have dealt with life. In short it’s a song dedicated to everyday heroes.

When people talk to me about the song, they often say it comes across as a story about losing a loved one. Although that isn’t what I thought of when I wrote it, I am very happy for it to mean that to someone else. A great way to cope with loss is to honour the person you miss by emulating what you loved about them.

The song is very “me” in the sense that I don’t really follow any rules in my songwriting; “Guts” is perhaps not the prettiest or most common word to use in a ballad, but when a phrase comes to me and it feels right, I use it! The song definitely represents a shift in my songwriting, where I try to find the simplest and most honest way to say what’s on my mind, something you will notice when you hear my new music in the future.

Hi, I’m Annette, I have been a huge country music fan since the early 90s those were the days we were lucky enough to have CMT in the UK. I enjoy nothing more than listening to country music whilst having a cold beer (or a moonshine) with friends. I try to as many gigs as I can here in the UK and in the USA; I think of Nashville as my second home and I am lucky to have made some amazing friends in Tennessee. Think Country is something I am very proud of, I just want to share my love and passion of all things country music related with you all.
